Inter-conference games make debut

The Western Conference portion of the 2008-09 GOJHL schedule has been released.

This season marks the start of inter-conference play with teams from the Midwestern and Golden Horseshoe conferences of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. Each of the nine Western Conference (WOHL) teams will play a 52-game regular season, 46 games against other Western conference opponents, and six games versus teams from the other two conferences.

26 of these inter-conference games will take place on the weekend of October 11-12 when the GOJHL will hold a Showcase Weekend at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex in St. Catharines. Each of the 26 GOJHL teams will play two games, with all games counting towards the regular season standings in the three conferences.

The Western Conference portion of the 2008-09 season begins on Tuesday, September 9th when the Strathroy Rockets host the St. Thomas Stars.

The defending Sutherland Cup champion Tecumseh Chiefs have moved and are now the LaSalle Vipers. They will begin defence of their title on Wednesday, September 10th when they host the Leamington Flyers at the Vollmer Rec Centre in LaSalle.

Another team with a new location and name is the Lambton Shores Predators (formerly the Petrolia Jets). The Predators open their season on Thursday, September 11 when they travel to Sarnia to play the newly named Legionnaires (formerly the Blast).

The Predators home rink is The Shores Rec Centre in Forest, and they play their first home game in their new digs on Friday, September 12 against the Rockets.

The Legionnaires will play host to the GOJHL Propsects Game on Monday, January 19, 2009.

The regular season concludes with two games on Sunday, February 22.
